Jimmie Johnson: The NASCAR Legend Who Dominated the Sport for Two Decades
We’re about to witness the career of a true NASCAR legend – Jimmie Johnson! Over the past two decades, this superstar driver has won countless races and won seven championships.
Johnson started racing when he was just a kid in El Cajon, California. He quickly rose through the ranks of various racing leagues and made a name for himself in NASCAR.
Johnson’s love of speed began at age five when he rode a motorcycle for the first time on a track. After that, he got into various forms of racing, including off-road racing.
In 2000, Johnson made his debut in the Busch Series, now called the Xfinity Series. In 2001, he won his first race, catching Rick Hendrick’s attention.
Johnson signed with Hendrick’s Cup Series team in 2001, and the rest is history. A win at California Speedway in 2002 cemented Johnson’s status as a top driver.
That was just the beginning. Besides winning seven races that season, Johnson finished third in the standings. His back-to-back championships in 2003 and 2004 included the closest championship race in NASCAR history against Kurt Busch.
His dominance continued from 2006-2008 when he won three consecutive championships. By winning four straight championships in 2009, he tied Cale Yarborough and Richard Petty’s records.
Aside from his championships, Johnson was a standout driver. He’s one of the most successful drivers in NASCAR history with 83 Cup Series wins. In his last season in 2020, he showed he still had what it takes with a win at Phoenix Raceway.
